So, my current project is a quilt that started life as this......

.....and has ended up as this........

It is enormous. I can't remember the exact measurements, but is around 140x170cms. I am currently hand quilting it, which is probably going to take an age. It is, however, providing me with an alternative to watching TV. When I qualified as a nurse in September I struggled to do anything in the evenings other than getting sucked into mind-numbing television. After three years of relentless studying, morning, noon and night, I needed to find other things to to do. I have therefore decided to try my hand at quilting. So far it is proving to be intricate work but progress is fast. It's relaxing and so rewarding to make something so pretty.

The main fabric is a white and yellow flowers fabric that I picked up in a charity shop for £1.99. Oh, and did I mention that it was four metres of Laura Ashley fabric circa 1983?! Bargain. Brand new. I've already made a dress out of it and wanted to make something equally as useful and pleasurable with the left overs. The rest of the fabrics are coordinating ones from local fabric shops, no fancy designer names for these. The backing fabric is a large flat sheet also acquired on a charity shop trip. You can't see it in the picture but it is just as pretty as the front, I'll post a picture when it's finished (when I am 50 no doubt).

The inspiration for this quilt was taken from the 'hammock' quilt in this book by Jane Brocket...

...which can be found here. It is a beautiful book, with inspiring modern quilts.

You can see some of Jane Brocket's other work here.
